So, earlier today – exactly 18-months after buying my Nokia N95, it was time to upgrade my phone.
I thought long and hard about this and decided; ya know what – I’m gonna keep it! That’s right, after a year and a half of stunning pictures and video from the N95′s 5-megapixel camera, excellent built-in GPS, 3.5G mobile connection speeds, wi-fi and a superb browser (plus all that great symbian software) – I decided not to upgrade.
Why didn’t I upgrade?
I am a tech geek, a natural ‘early adopter’. I’m the guy that ALWAYS buys ‘the next big thing’ and happily pays a premium too. I smiled when my iPhone shot down in price a couple of months after I bought it (on import.) I even laughed when my £350 ($600 US) Saga Dreamcast bundle was worth less than a cup of coffee within a year of buying it.
The reason I didn’t upgrade was simple; I love my N95 and the way it integrates with my business and my life! I simply saw no reason (yet) for me personally to trash a great phone.
By the way, my N95 is with 02 (I’m based in the UK), with unlimited data (and it’s fast), plus 800 minutes of any time / network calls, 1000 sms texts plus monthly added extras for £20, (less than $40 US a month!)
I have played with the 3G iPhone for two weeks and enjoyed it; but my iPod Touch has lots of the same features. I also own stacks of great software for my N95, which makes it even harder to cast it aside.
The N96?
Of course, when the N96 has been in the wild for a while, I might change my mind – but for now, it’s business as usual.
The Nokia E90, now that’s a device! It’s brick like structure spawns a whole host of quips from non-geeks, “you building a house?” is a typical remark. Unfortunately the E90 has been around for too long, the E71 provides gentle relief from a previously weighty pocket.
Yep, the E71 is a sleek N95 for people who have a camera (the E71’s camera is awful). Oh and it looks a lot nicer in the flesh than it does on screen.
If you fancy an Internet connection on your iPod touch when you are out and about then JoikuSpot Premium is excellent! It turns your phone into a hotspot (AdHoc Wi-Fi) so you can use your 3G connection on your iPod touch or anything that is Wi-Fi enabled. The free JoikuSpot didn’t work on my E71, but shelling out about £10 for the premium version did the trick. Other good apps for Symbian S60v3 are Google Maps, fring, Handy Safe and of course Opera Mini.
I don’t care how fast you can type on an iPhone, it still feels unnatural.
Thanks for such a well-written comment!
Yes, the N90 is a superb device and I love the huge screen!
I have used an E71 and LOVE the keyboard – it’s better, in my opinion, than the N95 keyboard. There’s no doubt that for people who don’t need the additional N95 N96 bells and whistles, it’s a great alternative.
TTNB
can any one tell me in its ultimate storage capacity how much song can i store in N96?
Thanks
Hey
just received a text from the carphone warehouse to upgrade my phone (o2) …i immediately thought that i didn’t really feel like changing my beloved N95!!
I googled “what to upgrade to after loving n95″ and there I am..
haha!
And found this post. I am clearly several months behind you but I FEEL THE SAME!!!
I wanted to check if some other persons felt like me!
I am not even sure there is anything I don’t like about it… OK, could be less bulky but it is so light though!!
What do I like:
- the memory
- the Nokia (I am fool in love with Nokia)
- the symbian extra apps which some of the times mess up my phone, but hey, flash, forfeit my warranty, add games….
If anything, I may decide to go to o2 directly because you talk about unlimited data! wow!
I really don’t see the advantage of being with the CPW…they never have the phone before the rest and…oh yes, I almost forgot, the phones I get from them are not locked on the network…maybe this is why I went there in the first place….hmmm.. I digress….
