Kevin Rose, tea and rock climbing
OK – So Kevin Rose, one of the the guys behind digg.com and revision3, is now the second most followed person on Twitter. This would be fine – but he’s waaaaaaaaaay too boring on Twitter to have that many followers! In case you don’t already know, a typical Rose Tweet is something like;
“Went rock climbing, drank some tea, climbed another rock..”
Does that sound like the second most interesting person on Twitter? Of course not – If anyone else was that dull, they would have even fewer followers than a crap blog writer like me!!
So, what else could be attracting people to Kevin Rose?
He’s rich – I mean, INSANE RICH! Fortunately for him, there are legions of people out there who are attracted like ass-kissing magnets to rich people. They love to kiss rich ass – they can’t help themselves. They just ‘need’ to get close to people with money. He’s a smart guy, but he’s about as interesting as one of those rocks he climbs on Twitter.
Perhaps if he REALLY drank the fake booze he uses with his ‘friend’ on diggnation, he might loosen up a little. (You knew that he’s really a tea-drinking health nut right?)
Follow Kevin Rose on Twitter
PLEASE – if you do not already follow Kevin Rose on Twitter PLEASE START NOW! See for yourself, if it’s his dazzling wit or bank balance, which is topping the Twitter charts!
I’m actually slightly offended by this article and your related tweets: I follow him because I’m interested in his latest projects and any interesting news that he may have encountered, instead of expecting him to entertain me. If it’s interesting news then I’ll look it up, but if not then it’s just a case of “meh” and move on. My point is tweets are mini-blogs and they do not necessarily have to be interesting for everyone.
Having said that, yes, Kevin may not be as interesting as other celebrities (such as his buddy Alex Albrecht), but then I don’t feel there is any need for such bashing here.
And I don’t think he pretends to drink beer.
I asked why someone who’s so dull on twitter is the 2nd most followed person.
You answer that:
“Kevin may not be as interesting as other celebrities…”
So, you agree that he’s NOT the 2nd most interesting person on Twitter – right?
How can you feel offended by an article that’s nothing to do with you? Oh, and if you are offended – STOP reading my crap!
Rose is a bright guy. But on Twitter he’s dull.
He has that many followers only because of Digg and Diggnation… not exactly idol worship, but there is always that hope that he might post insider info or interesting updates that may be work-related. I chose not to follow him to help boost Leo’s numbers during their “contest,” and I still choose not to follow him because his tweets only “inspire” ennui.
@jeffiwag,
That makes total sense! I can see people following him as part of their work – because of his connections.
It’s the ass-kissing crap that pisses me off. He’s actually a nice guy (we have a mutual friend) and very interesting – yet on Twitter he’s just too dull to be the 2nd most followed person.
Thanks!
lol. I love this. I mean I think Kevin is super smart, but he’s definitely not interesting enough to be #2 in the twitterverse.
My favorite person to follow is @sugarrae – a sassy/bitchy/rant&raving/crazy/cool/knowledeable SEO woman. She rants and goes off on people left and right and reading her ranting and raving throughout the day working is pure entertainment.
If you end up following her let her know that @griffingranberg sent ya. ;) //g
@Griffin,
That’s exactly my point – you really get it, which is cool.
Rose is a super-smart guy who’s gonna go even further – but no way is he the 2nd most interesting person on Twitter.
I’m following @sugarrae – let’s see!
You said this post has nothing to do with me, but it does, because it’s pointing at people who are following Kevin.
Looking away from your reasoning though, another reason that he’s the second most followed person is simply because of networking – firstly, a significant portion of Twitter users are in the tech industry or courses, so they would naturally end up following tech people like him and yourself via other users of close proximity in the first place; secondly, most show hosts of Revision3 podcasts use Twitter, so Kevin’s name’s bound to appear under each hosts and fans of different shows would click the follow button just for the sake of it.
Another reason would be that Twitter is failing to attract the less tech-savvy people, therefore people follow one another based on just mutual interest in technology, instead of their posts.
There are many more reasons that are probably better than your theory, which alone fails to make an argument. You don’t write crap – it’s just that I felt offended by being accused of sniffing after Kevin’s money.
@richard Lai,
Please stop reading this blog if it upsets you. This is not the blog for sensitive souls like you. You are too good for my crap!
Go visit Cali Lewis at http://www.geekbrief.tv She’s smart, informed and beautiful – and she’s never offended anyone in her life.
Kevin Rose is totally a twitter bore.
I thought it was just me who was missing something, but he really is uninteresting.
I think you made that richard guy cry earlier :)
Leigh X
I would rather listen to Kevin Rose talk about climbing rocks then have to listen to online marketers.
@Leigh: LOL only cringe, not cry.
Of course, if Twitter really is just about popularity vs. interesting then I’m not using Twitter the way it’s meant to be. This would mean I need to be educated by The Tech News Blog as it really is the only blog that makes sense at the moment.
@Richard Lai,
Twitters not about anything – it’s just people communicating. I am totally aware of the pull Kevin Rose has because of his media reach, I’m just amazingly surprised that people follow him.
If he was as interesting on Twitter as he is of Twitter, it would be a start. He’s a very insightful guy and a true geek – it’s just a pity he hides his personality on twitter.
@Editor,
Point taken. Kevin’s latest posts about teas made me realise something. Regardless of his teasing in the Diggnation podcasts, he’s actually more of a hippie than Hippie Glenn, who is a true legend.
I guess I wasn’t in the right state of mind when fixing my mate’s HP laptop last night. Sorry about the rant.
On Twitter, everyone is boring.
What about Jason Calacanis? All he talks about are his parties with famous people (who he can’t name). Then he bangs on about his poker games. He’s a cock. And dull as hell. Why do people follow him?
In case you’re intersted I’ve put up a new site for people getting tired of the Kevin Rose hullabaloo. Check out http://www.ihatekevinrose.com
Hi Gregor,
Calacanis is the kid at school that got his ass kicked each day.
He chooses to give the impression that he’s somehow ‘cool’ now with his bullshit posts about poker games and how rich he is.
Sad really.
The Heavy.
There’s NO WAY I am gonna let you promote your site; http://www.ihatekevinrose.com
Why should I allow you to say that http://www.ihatekevinrose.com even exists.
No, if you want a link from here to http://www.ihatekevinrose.com you are mistaken buddy!
Gotta go read http://www.ihatekevinrose.com now
Bye!
I’m amused.
Riddle me this: Why is Barack Obama the most followed person on twitter? He doesn’t even write his own posts. It’s not like Barack’s life is any more interesting than Kevin Rose’s, no? It was just more convenient for you to attack Kevin Rose than the future president.
… and Rose is more relevant to you than your future president? Oh man.
Where in my post did I suggest that Kevin Rose is more important or relevant than the President-elect? I merely proposed a comparison as to why you would attack Kevin Rose as opposed to Barack Obama. It would appear to me that your life revolves more around digg and rev3 than US politics.
This article would have been significantly more valid had you attacked the #1 person on twitter rather than a #2.
Bitshiftr,
Why would my life revolve around US politics, when I am not American and live on another continent?
Why ‘attack’ the guy at number one when he is clearly relevant to more people than your idol Kevin Rose?
I have a question for you:
Do you love Kevin Rose? You can tell me. It’s just between you and me, no one reads this blog – its shit. I sense a lot of love coming from you. You sound ‘hurt’ for Kevin?
Bitshifter sounds like he / she has a full-on crush on Kevin Rose.
It might be love, but it could just be hero worship?
Kevin Rose is no more interesting than the likes of John Dvorak or Leo Laporte. Kevin Rose built a very successful business therefore I admire how he monetized digg.com through deals with Microsoft ads. It is for the same reason that I follow Gary Vaynerchuk. Wine truly had no place on the internet until Gary began recording WineLibraryTV and create an internet revolution like he is doing.
To answer your question, no, I do not love Kevin Rose. I admire their ability to market and monetize their services, therefore I follow them. Gary Vaynerchuk holds his own “keynotes” at bars and on streets in New York and offers insight into how to market a product on the internet and most importantly how to monetize it. I follow Gary for that reason and I follow Kevin Rose for his success. Plus I wanted a free iPhone and now I want a free Macbook Pro.
Who mentioned that wine guy or Dvorak or Leo?
You came here telling me Obama was wrong to be at number one on Twitter but Rose was right to be at number 2?
Love can make ya crazy!
I mentioned Gary, Leo, and John. Maybe you should read my post.
You chose the topic of Kevin Rose and I just wanted you to explain your choice of why you attacked him.
You’re refusing to answer my question. That just affirms that you know absolutely nothing regarding what you’re talking about.
The Rose fanboy is pathetic.
Why let assholes like that comment here?
Bitshiftr. Get a room with Rose and stop writing garbage. I’m an American and to suggest our next President don’ deserve to be number one on twitter is bullshit, like the stuff in your brain.
@Ralph,
I think it’s a kid – I am not blocking someone just because he’s weird or disagrees with me.
@Slam,
Absolutely.
bitshifter,
Seriously dude – you are making a total dick of yourself.
I am happy to post your crap here because the whole blog’s a piece of crap, but I’m actually starting to feel sorry for the abuse you are getting.
Slam 09, I fully supported Barack Obama’s campaign. Despite the fact that I am not American, I supported his ideals. He deserves his followers.
You’re taking a very immature subject and applying it to something more serious than you realize. Grow up.
Twitter is still very small and niche, and Kevin Rose brought 60000 new people to Twitter. I wasn’t aware that Twitter was an entertainment service.
“I wasn’t aware that Twitter was an entertainment service.”
What DID you think it was then?
Something to NOT entertain?
Bitshifter. Do you just write random words and see what happens? You love rose because you are almost as boring as he is.
Slam09
You are totally right. Bitshiftr’s a bore.
Go away and ruin another blog eh??
“Twitters not about anything – it’s just people communicating.” – Tech News Blog Editor
That’s what I thought it was about. Now I don’t want to give you the wrong impression about my feelings towards Kevin. I think his life is just as mundane as my own. His tweets suck and as far as I know, mine are no better. I’ll concede this point to you.
I still don’t understand how we can ignore the fact that Diggnation captivated a market of 60000 people, brought them all to twitter, and thus people follow him. I honestly couldn’t give two shits about his rock climbing or the tea he drinks or where he buys his shoes. He could be the single reason that twitter is as successful as it is. I heard about twitter through a friend who heard about it on Diggnation, and I’m sure many more heard about it the same way. That in itself is huge.
Slam 09,
You’re picking a fight and that’s incredibly immature. I support Obama just as much as you do. You have no further reason to attack me.
Bitshifter,
So, you didnt read the post?
The guy said in this post about Kevin Rose:
“He’s a smart guy, but he’s about as interesting as one of those rocks he climbs on Twitter.”
He’s talking about Rose being a bore on Twitter NOT about rose being a bore OFF Twitter. You then said the same thing; “His tweets suck ”
So, you agree with the post, after making yourself look a total idiot? Read a post next time, and then comment.
Keith, your comment made me think about something. Maybe it’s because Kevin’s life may be a tad bit interesting OFF Twitter that we feel compelled to follow him ON Twitter. His followers want to live vicariously through what he said on Twitter.
But this discussion did not arise out of who is boring and who is not boring. I just wanted to know why he chose to attack Kevin over Barack. I still don’t have an answer.
Bitshiftr,
I didn’t mention Obama because this is a TECH news blog not a political blog.
Rose is the number one TECH person on Twitter.
You seriously missed that? The clue is in the title of the blog:
The Tech News Blog.
I cannot make it any clearer surely?
I see you also now agree with my main point, yet you never acknowledged it?
So, I have answered your question – yes?
Bitshiftre. Go away. you are a bore! Nothing you say makes any sense and you keep changing your crap.
GO AWAY!
Bitshifter
Why no apology for attacking the blog guy when you just didnt read the post. I hate it when people go to a blog with a fake name and attack the blog. Im with Keith. Go bore on another blog.
On topic, you contradicted yourself on this one;
first you stated that you have no idea why he’s the second most followed guy on twitter, then you ended your blog begging people to follow him.
Begging?
I asked people to follow him, so that they could experience the dull void that is Kevin Rose on Twitter.
A smart and funny guy away from Twitter – but all tea drinking and climbing rocks on Twitter.
Weird…
I have followed Kevin Rose since TechTV. So I would consider myself a fan. As far as Twitter goes, he treats it as a popularity contest and follows only his close friends and associates. I enjoy Diggnation and keep up with his ongoings but after witnessing him giving away tech toys as incentives for followers on Twitter, I decided to not contribute to his huge ego boost. So, boring or not I am not a follower of his on Twitter. Great blog by the way!
Kevin Rose is a bright and REALLY interesting guy – away from Twitter. My point was that on twitter, his tweets don’t reflect his follower numbers – so I wondered what else made people follow him. Got a few great answers now!
