A $99 iPhone available this summer

As reported here last Saturday, it’s looking very likely that there will be a version of the Apple iPhone available later this year, for $99 (after subsidies.)  Well, it seems there are MORE claims being made about it today, this time from The Sillicon Alley Insider, which tells us:

Apple will start selling a cheaper, ‘entry-level’ iPhone sometime this summer, for around $99 after subsidy, according to “checks,” RBC analyst Mark Abramsky said in a note this morning.

There are obvious advantages to Apple of getting a $99 iPhone into the marketplace. Increased iPhone user numbers means a bigger market for their extremely profitable App Store and iTunes.

However, some of the rumours regarding what features will be stripped from a $99 iPhone (like ‘no multi-touch’) make little sense to me.  Stripping key features like that from an iPhone, would ruin the user experience (not very Apple!!)  I’m taking all current iPhone reports with a pinch of salt, though the number of industry insiders and analyst’s predicting a $99 entry evel machine is increasing. Food for thought!

A couple of days ago, I commented on Twitter that the best “rumor mills” around are one’s focusing on Apple, because just about anything they say could be true. Apple is such an innovative and trend-setting company that you never know what they might come out with next. Having said that, a stripped down version of the iPhone (or any Apple product, for that matter) doesn’t sound like something Apple would do. Could this be a symptom of Steve Jobs’ recent “stepping down” as head honcho, or is it just another product of the rumor mills? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. But, I’ll tell you one thing, I’ll be first in line to buy a $99 iPhone, because “I’ll buy just about anything, as long as it’s shiny and made by Apple!” :D

Do I want an iPhone that’s a tad cheaper with a whole TON of features that are standard to the iPhone missing for a better price? No. Do I want to sell as many iPhone’s as possible because we arent quite selling them in our current economic state? Absolutely. A dilemma that will be interesting to see the results from if enacted.
