After purchasing an extremely fast gaming HP laptop (6 GB RAM; 500 GB HD) I use for photo work loaded with Vista Home Premium and everything but Windows 7 (Aug 1, 2009), I think I should have received Windows 7 free as it came out right after I received the laptop. No way I can afford more after the cost of this 18" loaded laptop (one of the best). I cannot afford more for a long time. So I either get to sing the praises of Win7 OR not. It's up to Microsoft, and they an afford to do this for loyal Windows users (since the 3.1 nasty version came out years ago...I was using DOS to talk to my PC!!!). Get with it MS; do the right thing. I will also be attending the university again (going into 9th year after several degrees...I'm 73 years young), and I blab a lot about what I like or don't like which includes my feelings about companies. Things suck a LOT in America today, and I'd like to think a few good companies remain and have big hearts for us above the Chinese et al. I HATE outsourcing more than I have words! Most technicians outside of the U.S know diddly about our machines even if they make them. I'm sick and tired of seeing "made in China" or wherever. Reminds me of "Made in Japan" years ago when stuff was all junk. Let's get America back on the map and quit calling it the largest Third World County in the world. THIS IS NOT MY AMERICA. I'm a child of the Great Depression, and I know good when I see it. So give some software/OS away MS! Thanks.

Free to every vista owner yes. To Dell you stink no time limit. As I stated last night to you the laptop I am working on it is owned by a teenager that did not upgrade and this is the first time I have seen in a long time. You think they are going to update it. Get rid of that stupid date and bring back the free update so I do not have to redo the entire system. you can control who gets it from you system so bring it back.

I agree, but you really don't need a swap partition in Linux, it can be a file as well. And the swap file in Windows is allocated in one continuous block so it really doesn't have a drawback that it's a file. However, everything does run faster in Linux and they have journal file systems that don't need periodic defragmentation like NTFS .. I still can't believe they use NTFS in Win 7.

I feel exactly the same way. Windows 7 should have been free for us, beta (err Vista) testers. Not only did we test, but we had to pay for it.

Anyway, I'm doing exactly the same as you, however, I'm not switching to a Mac as a main OS, but to Linux as main OS. I'm also a developer and any new apps I make for my customers will be for Linux, except if there are requirements for Winblows.

Windows is going on a virtual machine for testing and app support. Other than that ... hello Slackware & KDE 4.4!

It seems everyone wants a free handout i.e Win7 as a kind of compensation but you're missing the point completely the fact is Vista should have never been released or even made for that matter unless Microsoft's sole intention was to screw everyone over knowing that they would release Win7 at a later date all along. I wont go into too much depth but basically from what I've learnt and experienced with Vista I believe that a trading standards or a regulatory body of some sort should've stepped in, led an investigation and penalized Microsoft, it should have almost certainly never got to point where it was the default OS on almost every new spec pc/laptop. Anyone who hasn't had problems with Vista obviously hasn't used their computer for anything other than menial tasks. The pc I have now is probably the best one I've ever had but I struggle to notice the difference, Vista does not harness the power of it at all, it's like replacing a claw hammer with your head all you're going to end up with is a major headache.

Last year I got a virus on my computer and ended up messing up my windows xp by deleting some of the wrong files. So I went out and bought Vista for 200 dollars which is a lot of money for me. I could not get it to load (other disks worked fine and yes it was a dvd drive). Eventually a friend gave me the trial of Windows 7 which loaded and worked fine. For some reason I thought I had read that 7 would be free for Vista users and I even remember entering in my Vista serial key for some reason. Apparently I was mistaken as now my Win 7 will shut down in 15 days. I cannot afford another os right now. Might be time to look into Ubuntu and such.

I'm guessing you have not seen how close Vista is to Win7? If you had, you would realize that Win7 is just Vista, with the bugs and bloat removed. I see it, like many others,. as a service pack for Vista. To charge Vista users (who were all beta testers in my opinion) for Win7 was wrong, in my opinion Brian.

I have to be honest with you, I was one of the people who didnt upgrade to Vista from XP because of people moaning about it, then I got a new system and with it came Vista, I loved it, I never had any problems, went 2 years without even having to re-install the system, I do not think it is fair for Vista users to think they should get 7 for free.

If you buy a 2010 model car and you do not like it, does that entitle you to get the 2011 model for free? I know it is more money but the principle is the same, this is not a restaurant where you can just send the steak back to the kitchen and get a new one, this is Tech and sometimes you buy things you do not like, simple as that.

Now I do think MS should have been less expensive with their win 7. and maybe the $49 upgrade price should have persisted after the initial offer.

Just my opinion.
